Sterling Brassfield had the finish line all to himself in the 200.
More than any other single series of meets, the Colorado Elite Series has, this spring, provided more opportunities for athletes to run than anything else. It isn't the CHSAA season, but it's been a welcome outlet for some serious track and field competition that's been mostly lacking around the state.
Today's meet suffered a bit from conditions. With temperatures barely creeping into the 40s, not many explosive-event types showed up. But, there were nice performances all around to be found from those--both distance and explosive events--who did show up. That said, the track was eight lanes of dry plowed into a massive field of snow. Aside from the track, there weren't many places to keep your feet dry.
The most dominating performance of the day came down to a toss-up between Kidus Begashaw's 3200 (9:48.73) and Oscar Goll's 1600 (4:26.70).
The best finish of the day belonged to the girls 3200, where Emily Lamontagne nipped Ava Escorcia at the finish, 11:19.02 to 11:19.78. Imani Fernandez-Gorbea edged freshman Reese Tucker, 5:20.30 to 5:21.17, in the 1600 for a close second.
Double event winners were hard to find, but Amarachi Onuoha pulled off a double in the 100 and 400. Zenobia Witt also doubled in the long and triple jump, but she probably would have preferred for that double to have come with competition. Not many people wanted to jump today.
Sterling Brassfield dominated the 200 in 22.75, and Joe Ciccio won the 100 out of the second of three heats in 11.49.
With the completion of this meet and the one up at Johnstown today, we mostly have a wrap on the track preseason. I say mostly because there is one more meet yet to happen next week.
